Stephen Coates (Chairman), Principal, Moore Stephens


Stephen’s leadership roles have focused on business building, engagement delivery, and people development responsibilities. He is engaged for short technical assignments and annual coaching briefs by high profile brand name entities. Stephen is a results driven specialist with demonstrated success in building strong business relationships with C level executives in Australia and globally.

Stephen has over 20 year’s experience operating assurance & risk functions in both the public and private sector and leading governance risk & control teams in a professional services context.  In the past Stephen has founded two assurance & advisory firms; one to provide compliance & regulatory services, and the other to provide governance & risk services.  He has held Non-Executive Director positions in a rural merchandise business, and a global not-for-profit organisation, and he has also served as a member of the Audit & Risk Committee for several entities.

Stephen has significant IT assurance & advisory experience specialising in information technology governance, risk and control. Stephen has been involved in major IT advisory, security and forensic projects and has presented papers nationally and internationally on his work.

Stephen is a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Quality Reviewer for the Institute of Internal Auditors, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Government Auditing Professional, and Certified in Risk Management Assurance.  He is an international member of the Institute of Internal Auditors’ Professional Issues Committee co-authoring and reviewing topical global technology guidance and position papers as well as a reviewer of the Information Systems Audit & Control Association’s most recent CISA Review Manual.
